This chart is a hard-copy compilation of identity silhouettes that appear on the helmsman computer screen upon sensor contact and recognition of Federation starships. During the several seconds while recognition is being confirmed by the ship's main computer, indentifying information is unavailable or labeled as tentative. Thus the helmsman must know these silhouettes in order to make a split-second decision as to appropriate action.
The ability to recognize all of these spacecraft silhouettes along with those on other designated charts, is one requirement for entry into the Helm Officer Graduate Program. Midshipmen planning to specialize in helmsmanship upon graduation should use these charts for familarization purposes prior to taking the entrance examination.
